How to not die in Rust
Rust is hostile. Most players will shoot you on sight, animals want to eat you, and the environment is trying to kill you.
Safe zones are your best friend
The main safe zones where PvP is not allowed:
- Outpost — Biggest. Has recyclers, vending machines, a research bench, a Workbench 1
, a repair bench
, an oil refinery, and a BBQ. The beginner's hub. (No mixing table
here — that's at Bandit Camp.) - Bandit Camp — Smaller. Has a gambling wheel, black market, and the mixing table
for brewing teas. - Fishing Villages — Small coastal stops. The large Fishing Village has a recycler; small Fishing Villages do not. Useful for the boat
shopkeeper and shelter from the open ocean. - Ranch / Large Barn — Newer 2025 safe zones with farming-focused vendors and a small water source.
Never run around with a weapon drawn in a safe zone. You get a roughly 5-second warning to holster before NPC turrets
engage. Safe items you can hold (rock
, torch
, flashlight, paddle) won't trigger them — anything else will.
KOS culture: assume everyone wants you dead
KOS = Kill On Sight. The default behavior of almost every player.
Even if someone waves or types in chat, treat it as a possible trap.
What to do when you see another player
- Run — sprint perpendicular and break contact.
- Hide — crouch behind a rock
, tree, or hill. - Observe — watch where they go.
Only engage if you have a clear advantage: surprise, better gear, or a friend.
Basic concealment
Crouching saves your life. You make less noise, you're a smaller target, you blend into bushes.
Use the terrain — rocks
, trees, hills, bushes.
Night is your friend if your torch
is off.
