Rust Survival / Beginner Mode / GET YOUR FIRST SCRAP (NO MATH REQUIRED)
Get your first scrap (no math required)
Scrap is the currency of Rust. You spend it constantly.
What scrap is and where it comes from
Three main sources:
- Barrels — Rusty barrels along roads. Drop scrap
, components, food, clothing. - Crates — Wooden and military crates at monuments. Better loot but more dangerous.
- Recyclers — Found at most monuments. Convert items into scrap
and components.
The 3 easiest scrap routes for beginners
Fishing Village run — Head to the nearest LARGE Fishing Village (the small ones don't have a recycler). Safe zone, low traffic, easy in and out.
Junk pile loop — Run a road between two safe zones and smack every barrel. Easy scrap
+ items to recycle.
Small monument barrel run — Hit smaller monuments like Oxum's Gas Station, Lighthouse, or Supermarket. Usually no scientists.
What to recycle (and what to skip)
Always recycle:
- Tech trash
— From electronics nodes and barrels. 5 scrap
each plus HQM
. - Road signs
— Recycle into HQM
and metal frags
. - Sewing kits
— Recycle into 10 cloth
+ 2 rope
(not scrap
directly, but the cloth
is great for clothing and sleeping bags
). - Scopes, weapon parts, electronics — Almost always worth it.
Skip recycling:
- Raw materials — Wood
, stone
, metal, sulfur
. Total waste. - Food and ammo — Eat or use these.
How a recycler actually works
- Walk up to the recycler, press the interact key.
- Drop items into the input slots.
- Press the power button.
- Wait. Pick up scrap
and components from the output.
Stand right next to it the whole time. Other players can grab your output.
