Playing solo, duo, or with friends
Rust is a different game depending on group size.
Solo: simpler, harder fights
One person against everyone. No one to share loot, no one to watch your back.
Solo is the best way to learn. You make every decision and keep all the loot. Recommended for your first one or two wipes.
Duo: a partner to watch your back
Two players on the same team. Double farming, someone to revive you, much better in fights.
The catch: your teammate has to actually show up.
Trio: the sweet spot
Three players. Split jobs (farmer, builder, scout), enough firepower to raid small bases.
If you have two friends, trio is probably the most fun.
Clan: more people, more problems
4+ players. Big bunker compounds. Massive resources, raid almost anything.
The downsides: drama, arguments, and you become a giant raid target.
Server team limits
Most servers have a team limit. Common limits: solo-only, duo (max 2), trio (max 3), or the vanilla default of 8.
Always check the server rules.
Trust is earned, not given
The biggest rookie mistake: trusting people too fast.
- Never give your codelock
combo to someone you just met - Keep a backup key somewhere hidden
- Don't authorize strangers on your Tool Cupboard

Trust takes hours of playing together.
How to team up in-game
- Press TAB to open your inventory
- Click Contacts at the top (this is where Rust manages teams and friends)
- Create a team, then either:
- Add a teammate by Steam ID through the Contacts menu, OR
- Walk up to the friend, look at them, and press E for the "Invite to Team" prompt
- They accept
Teammates show as green dots and you see their health.
The Rust+ companion app
Rust+ is a free phone app from Facepunch:
- Check your smart alarms

- Message teammates
- See online teammates
- Check the in-game map
Essential once you start playing seriously.
Quick recap
- Solo = best for learning. Duo = balanced. Trio = sweet spot. Clan = experienced.
- Always check the server's team limit.
- Never share your codelock
combo with someone you just met. - TAB → Contacts menu to officially team (UI label is Contacts, not Team).
- Install Rust+ — it's free and useful.
